Looking for a word

Way back in college I remember an English professor saying that there was a term for the situation when you are reading a word that you have never heard spoken and are unsure of the pronunciation. If I remember correctly, it was a French term.

Can anyone help me out in my search for that term? (It may have been a single word or a short phrase, I wasn't paying real close attention. wink )

TIA,
RudeDog
