Interstitial Tunes: Mad Props!

Last week (27 June episode) I was enjoying yet another pleasant episode of A Way With Words when I suddenly discerned the haunting tones of DJ Shadow's 1996 seminal album Endtroducing, specifically the track entitled "Changeling/Transmission 1". I stopped what I was doing in the kitchen to check if my computer had jumped from streaming audio to my copy of the album. Imagine my surprise when A Way With Words resumed. What a nice treat! Language experts that dig original ambient hip-hop!

Suitably informed, I was less shocked but no less surprised and delighted to hear the dulcet melody that begins Tommy Guerrero's 2006 From the Soil to the Soul between elements this week's (04 July) show.

I don't care who picked those tunes, take your duck* and accept my accolades. Fun with words and fun with music: What could be funner!

*I would be grateful if someone could explain the origin of the phrase "take your duck." I have heard it used while playing billiards many times to indicate that one may take the easy shot left by an opponent but never could find out its origin.

I dig the interstitial tuns, too, but all credit goes to our editor Tim Felten. He's got a great ear for the stuff.

I'm not sure how long ago it was, but I remember that an old episode of AWWW used the theme music from the excellent anime series Cowboy Bebop as a piece of interstitial music.

There's another show made by the same guy called Samurai Champloo that also has great music. I would suggest using some of it as interstitial music sometime.

I'm not a fan of anime, but the music of Yoko Kanno and the Seatbelts is great (I would have sworn they were an American group when I first heard them). I guess it's no surprise that folks who enjoy a way with words also enjoy a way with music.
