A "career alternative enhancement program" means a layoff.
We are awash in euphemisms and evasive language.

"Hull loss," a term used by the airlines, means a plane crash in ordinary English. "A pluralistic plan" is a hiring quota, and "semantic violence" usually means criticism or yelling.

My personal favorites are "Empowering Excellence" for staffing reductions through productivity benchmarking and "unanticipated outcome" for medical/surgical complications and medical errors.

Almost anyone can play this game, even in personal life. Here are a couple I've found useful:
1. Those are NOT "weeds" in my garden; they are "alternative perennials."
2. My dog is NOT a "mutt"; he is a "representative of ancestral diversity."

When I used to work in health-care, we enrolled people in research programs, then when they were done we disenrolled them.

One of the things I appreciated working for a hospital was that there was no double speak when some one died. A reason for disenrollment was "death."

I work at a community college now, and one which annoys me is developmental education. It means education for people who are not yet ready to take college level courses. It bothers me because all education is developmental.
