I used this expression this weekend, and its oddity struck me. It doesn't appear to have been discussed yet on this forum. Does anyone have sources, theories, or thoughts on its original meaning?

I've never researched it, but have assumed it was blood on one's hands, therefore unequivocally guilty.

You know, I think I might be less inclined to use this phrase given the origin. I typically use it in a lighthearted way, and now I will have this gruesome image in my head.
