Can I trust George Stimpson?

When I was a kid, Dad had a book titled "A Book About A Thousand Things: A Treasury of Odd and Fascinating Information", by George Stimpson, published in 1946. I would occasionally thumb through it and read a few short articles. I now have a reprinted copy and am noticing how many word and phrase etymologies are in this book. These explanations are given as fact, but no supporting documentation is given. The reader is expected to take everything at face value.

So, my question for the experts is this - How accurate, generally, are Mr. Stimpson's etymologies? Has anyone read this book and found many etymological errors, or found that they are generally correct?
