Just watched the movie A river runs through. The reference to my bluenosed friends was said and I want to know what it means.

As I understand it, "blue-nosed" refers to someone from upper class society with stiff social manners, "noses in the air", the kind who wouldn't consort with lowly "common folk".

There are multiple definitions for blue nose, one being a person from Nova Scotia. but the most common seems to be a prig.

Mots pf people say, "don't do anythingt I wouldn't do" in a joculare manner, but blue noses actually mean it, and are very judgmental about it; since they do so little, apparently thinking there's commandment "thou shall not have fun.", They are very annoying to be around.  Old spinster blue noses are often referred to as "Miss Grundy."
