What's the idea behind 'associated' in 'Associated Press'?

The Associated Press has been breaking news since it was created in 1846. That year, five New York City newspapers got together to fund a pony express route through Alabama in order to bring news of the Mexican War north more quickly than the U.S. Post Office could deliver it.

AP's history (as opposed to AP History)

Associated should be same as United in 'United States': partners of equal status.

Which would make 'Associate Press' all wrong.

'Associate State,' though never actually used, might describe well Puerto Rico, Italy, Greek- as a state that is of partial or lesser status relative to the other partners, as in Associate Professor, Associate Editor.
