"clenched fist" (northern and Scot. dialect), c.1300, from O.N. hnefi (cf. Norw. dial. neve, Swed. näfve, Dan. næve), not found in any other Gmc. language.
 
Excuse me for being a naif, but what are Gmc languages?

Short for "Germanic". Includes German, Dutch, all the Scandinavian tongues (including Icelandic but not Finnish), and English.
