This one has been driving me bonkers for years. Maybe I'm wrong but aren't the terms “but yet” and “and yet” redundant? “But yet” may be the one that disturbs me more than “and yet”. I know it's so common now. Is this gramatically correct? Am I a grammar snob? I will take your comments to heart as the truth and yet others may not.

In classical English, "and" is sometimes used as a synonym for "but". A modern-day remnant of that is "and yet".

I can only think of one example

I was serenely independent and content before we met;
Surely I could always be that way again-
And yet
I've grown accustomed to her look;
Accustomed to her voice;
Accustomed to her face.

my Fair Lady I've Grown Accustomed To Her Face

So a job I'm getting, possibly,
I wonder who my boss'll be?
I wonder if he'll take to me…?
What bonuses he'll make to me…?
I'll start at eight and finish late,
At normal rate, and all..but wait!

…I think I'd better think it out again.
