adult words for "boyfriend" and "girlfriend"

I'm wondering if there are words for adult, heterosexual, romantic relationships other than "boyfriend" and "girlfriend." They seem much more appropriate for young people and don't capture adult relationships. "Partner" sounds like we're either in business together or gay (not that there's anything wrong with that). Any suggestions?

My aunt met a man late in life and, while they never married, they were definitely a couple. She referred to him as her "gentleman friend"...I don't know how he referred to her.

I have heard "lady friend" used in that context.
