Don't apologize, Faraz; I now know a new Farsi idiom, that "place" is Farsi is often used to mean "importance". Not so far from English, really.
I've heard of Muharram, because it's on my calendar at work. I'd never heard of Imam Hossein. "Imam-Imam Hossein"? Is that a double-title for honor, or is his title "Imam" and his name is "Imam Hossein", or what?
And what does the "(pbuh)" after his name mean? As you see, my ignorance is almost limitless.
"Abbas"...any relation to "abu"?
I have heard very little Farsi here in the states, though three of my friends speak it with varying fluency: two are second generation from Iran, and one is Lebanese, but had done extensive traveling in the region. All three are from Los Angeles, though, which has the greatest population of Iranians or Persians of any city in the U.S. (I think that's true; I didn't check the accuracy of that).
As to your other question, Farnaz, I know very little about the religious figures or occasions you mentioned, unfortunately. If I am thinking of the correct figure, I know that Hossein is the Imam celebrated in Shi'a Islam as one of the true lineage of the prophet Mohammad, and he was killed along with his brethren at the battle of Karbala by the competing caliphate, that of the Sunnis. I have not, however, heard of the other names you mentioned. Please let me know, and also tell me if I was incorrect about Hossein.
Hello.Imama is an Arabic word that means leader.Imam Hossein is the third Imam(according to Shi`a)after Imam Ali and Imam Hasan.PBUH stands for peace be upon him.It is a sign for showing our respect toward them. His first name is Hossein.
Abbas was Imam Hossein`s brother. He showed a lot of courage in Karbala.Karbala is the plain where the war took place.Kufe is a city in Iraq.In that time, people of there asked Imam Hossein to go there and they promised to help him destroy the Yazid`s cruelty.Yazid was the most unpopular governor in the muslems` history. But when Imam Hossein was on the way to Kufe with his family, the people in Kufe did not fulfill. And Yazid surrounded Imam and killed all the 72 men with Imam Hossein. As Yazid did not let them to drink from the river locating near them, the Imam`s children became thirsty.Abbas ignored the danger and went to bring water for children but they cut his hands and killed him innocently.Even they killed Imam`s six-month-old son and took the women in Imam`s convoy to Yazid`s palace.Imam`s three-year-old daughter (Roghaye)died because she was so restless when they killed her father and cut his head.
Ashoora is the tenth day of Muharram.Imam Hossein was killed in this day.And a day before Ashoora,Abbas was killed. This day is called Tasua. Here in Iran today is Tasua.
Tunawrites what you said is correct. But a note.Imam did not go to Karbala to take the government. He only wanted to show the real Islam and make people free from any injustice.
Charles Dickens : “If Hussein had fought to quench his
worldly desires…then I do not understand why his sister, wife, and children
accompanied him. It stands to reason therefore, that he sacrificed purely for
Islam.â€
Wow, I continue to be impressed by you, Farnaz; quoting Dickens is great, though the current popular American novelists have long since left Dickensian tropes.
(Although, I'm a little worried about American literature -- Franzen's Freedom and Donoghue's Room are each ridiculously overrated. Literary masterpieces they are not, despite the hype.)
