Some words like 'word' itself, containing  /Éš/, seem to always keep it. But some others like 'world' sometimes sound as if it were  /É”r/ or something close to it. Is there such a thing or is it just my not-enough-sensitive ears?

Your hearing must be pretty sensitive to detect the difference. But if it's close to 'war,' then it's wrong, as perhaps when non-native speakers try too hard to do the diphthong of 'orl.'
