Does anyone know why the pronunciation of "-dict" /-dīt/ in word "indict" is so unusual as compared to that /-dict/ in words deriving from the same latin root such as "predict, verdict, edict, contradict, interdict etc."?

It seems "indict" is an erroneous form of "indite" but the spoken word of the latter has remained intact.

That's all I had the time to find as well. I had hoped to find out more why the two forms developed in the first place for this unique word, and then why the meanings diverged. No gold so far.
