My guess is the person who used the word 'slate' to mean 'quench' was combining 'slake' and 'sate'. If so, would that be called a scrambled eggcorn? In any case, it's just a guess, so feel free to refudiate it.

I have been meaning to post the same theory since I heard the podcast. This seems to be the simple solution Slake + Sate = Slate. As a matter of fact I had never heard the expression "slake your thirst" before. I have always said "sate your thirst."
