Linguist explains Obama's appeal. Since his emergence as a best-selling political theorist almost 10 years ago, linguist George Lakoff has consistently argued that Democrats are hopeless at communicating their ideas—and their values—in a compelling, persuasive way. Republicans, on the other hand, have become masters of what Lakoff calls framing—presenting political ideas as emotionally engaging narratives that appeal to our deepest values.
