In Thailand, the word that one uses when stubbing ones' toe, etc., is “OI!†(Perhaps there is a Yiddish/Thai connection?)
The word “OW!,†in Thai, means “I want,†(lit. “I takeâ€).
Much merriment results from foreigners exclaiming “I want [more]†when they are in pain, e.g., the Thai massage is too vigorous.
More fun with cross-language homophones: a Brazilian woman I used to work with found it hilarious every other Friday when people would run around the office exclaiming "Payday!"
(It sounds a great deal like the Portuguese translation of "I passed wind!")
When I lived in France in the early 70s there was a soda called "Pschitt!". Never did export that to any English speaking country.
And when Vick's cough drops first became available in Germany, they had to change the spelling (w instead of v) because as it stood, it would have been pronounced exactly the same as the German word for The F Word.
