I just ran across the term "Nutraceuticals" which I hadn't previously seen -- and I'm a physician with interest in complementary medicine!

I'm assuming that it's used for "nutritional supplements" that claim some sort of therapeutic benefits.

Any info on this term and what the term is meant to imply?

BTW:

My suspicion is that the term is used to provide a "Pharmaceutical" imprimatur yet allowing an end-run around the regulatory rules that would apply if they actually used that label.

The term is explained here, in an article from the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists.

And it's not an "end-run" around regulations. Since the late '90s (FDA Modernization Act of 1997, or "FDAMA"), U.S. law allows for a variety of health claims on foods and nutritional supplements. Hence the proliferation of these claims since then. (Some of which are downright funny.)
