Of that article in the NY Times is just wonderful. I'm guessing the folks from Intercourse, Pennsylvania can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that there are worse place names in the world.

Ah! I didn't realize there was an Intercourse, Pennsylvania. I knew there was one in Alabama.
Then there was Beaver College in Pennsylvania, which changed its name a few years ago to Arcadia University. And I used to have a T-shirt from a business school in Ohio called Dyke College, which eventually changed its name to Chancellor University.
Whenever I go to Zion National Park, I always pass through a small town called Virgin. In Virgin, Utah there is a petting zoo and it's sign says "Virgin Petting Zoo". I've always snickered at this and wondered about the creators of the sign.
