"Disambiguation" is mouthful. It's much-beloved by Wikipedia, and sounds like something recently coined, but not so! I started wondering during the morning drive, and looked it up.

Some dictionaries date it to 1963, but the OED pushes it back to 1827. I wonder if it fell out of use and was resurrected in the 1960's?

It is a very common term in legal parlance. A statute or ordinance that is written in such a way as to yield more than one possible interpretation may be in need of disambiguation.
